Sack The DJ
If you’ve ever heard those words shouted at some poor DJ when they had the misfortune to make a mistake on stage, chances are I was the one to shout them. Its an odd name for a DJ you might think, the irony being that if ever there was a DJ that should be sacked, it would be me. I guess you can think of it as kind of a disclaimer, like ‘hey, what were you expecting from a DJ called Sack the DJ’. At least its a bit catchier than DJ Suck.
Back in the day I started out playing hard house and trance records on my best mate’s shiny new 1200’s (You should move in, bring your decks!) Vinyl is the most addictive drug known to man. I shit you not, you think Jimmy Crackhabbit got it bad hocking his grandma to score a fix? Jimmy could be 3 days dry and be in a whole lot better shape than a vinyl junkie the day before payday. I love the black stuff, I used to be one of those elitist snobs who looked down on CDJs as kids toys. Micky Mouse Mixing. And sure, it really is, but arguing with technology is like arguing with a glacier. It will say nothing and in the end it will still win.
In the end the transition to The Future wasn’t even a choice I was directly presented with. I grew up, I got sick of night clubs filled with munted teeny boppers and started listening to psytrance and (eventually) going to doofs. Psytrance vinyl is kinda like the Loch Ness Monster, people talk about it occasionally but no one has ever actually seen it. Well ok, I have a dozen or so records actually, but you get the picture. Wanna play psy? Better get used to those Mickey Mouse kids toys.
Somewhere along the way, after years of talking shit with the Rockstar Philosopher about how one day we were gonna make our own music, we actually organised to get together and try do some stuff. It took us a while to find our collective assholes and figure out what exactly the fuck we were doing, but after 6 months or so we managed to release out debut track as Untiled Project. ‘Effect’ was more of an experimentation in what kinds of things we could do than a real release quality track, but hey you gotta start somewhere. As first efforts go, I’m pretty proud of it.
Since then our collaboration has been on and off. We produced a few more tracks together and I’ve released a few tracks that are entirely my own. Its generally pretty slow going these days, I can never find enough time to work on my music and when I do I find myself frustrated by my own lack of skill and creativity. So this blog was born, as an outlet for me to rant about my misadventures in music production….
